Welcome

As this is traditionally the time for reflection, we can look back on an extremely busy and productive year for CultureSouthampton.

The opening of SeaCity Museum in April and its success in generating visitors and profile was the latest important step in the development of the city’s Cultural Quarter. We were delighted that our applications to DCMS/Wolfson, the Garfield Weston Foundation and other trusts resulted in grants totalling £425,000 towards the project.

One of the year’s key highlights was the reception at No 10 Downing Street in September, at which Sir Nick Serota spoke to invited guests of his enthusiasm and warm support for Southampton’s new arts complex. This was part of our programme of developing relationships with supporters across the arts and heritage, education and business communities.

We look forward to building on this activity in 2013, and, with your support, moving towards our target of raising £2m towards completion of the arts complex in 2015.

Thanks for your continued interest in CultureSouthampton.

Spotlight on... FoSMAG

The Friends of Southampton’s Museums, Archives & Galleries (FoSMAG) was founded in 1977 by a group of Southampton residents who enjoyed the cultural life of the City and wanted to engage with that life in a more positive way. So FoSMAG became a registered charity dedicated to supporting the City’s rich heritage by assisting the work and and the staff of the museums, archives and galleries.

They are a network of active and enthusiastic volunteers, working in locations such as Tudor House, Archives, and the City Art Gallery.  One of the major activities is to raise funds for the Museum and Galleries’ collections.  For example, they have:
  • helped towards the purchase of two Surrealist paintings,
  • enabled the Archaeology Department to acquire a Medieval brooch,
  • contributed to the cost of restoring a large painting in the Art Gallery’s collection,
  • purchased a specialist microfiche reader/printer for the Archives Department.

FoSMAG members meet regularly to socialise and enjoy a programme of lectures. Recently they have heard about World War II’s effects on Southampton, and this month’s lecture will feature the local artist Derek Hill.

They produce a newsletter, published twice a year, which reflects the variety of members’ interests. Recent articles have featured the re-opening of Tudor House, the Life and Legacy of Robert Chipperfield, and new archaeological discoveries.
