Welcome

SeaCity Museum has good reason to celebrate its first birthday this month – not only has it exceeded all visitor projections, but has also received yet more prestigious accolades. It has been shortlisted for the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architecture) Awards 2013, having already received a Civic Trust Award 2013.

This is further evidence of the quality and significance of Southampton’s investment in cultural facilities, and the impact they can make on a national and international stage, as well as providing great facilities for local communities.  These characteristics are key components of the city’s bid, together with Portsmouth, to become the UK City of Culture 2017.  CultureSouthampton warmly welcomes the joint bid, and we invite everyone to show their support by signing up online.  It is another important element of Southampton’s drive for cultural regeneration and development, and a vital catalyst for investment in a thriving cultural life for the city.

We hope you will join us in supporting the bid, by signing up at www.culturesouthampton.org.uk/2017

Thank you for your support.

Spotlight on... a space arts

CultureSouthampton Trustee Daniel Crow is the director of the arts organisation ‘a space’. This registered charity strives to provide opportunities for emerging artists to make new work, develop their careers and for audiences in Southampton to engage with high quality artistic experiences.

They achieve this through many project platforms including ArtVaults, the Arches Studios, Tower House, and the Sorting Office. The studio projects offer a diversity of spaces to support creative careers. Their latest Talent Development project offers bursaries that enable artists to create, propose and run a bespoke professional development project.

Until recently their main gallery space was located at the Bargate Monument, at the heart of Southampton’s city centre. From 2006 to 2012 ‘a space’ welcomed over 140,000 visitors to the gallery, staged 42 exhibitions and showed the work of over 250 artists.  The final exhibition featured the work of artists from the Arches Studios.
