Southampton celebrates Black History Month

Southampton has celebrated Black History Month over a number of years, and its impact and influence has increased over the years. Schools, universities and colleges always play a significant role.

Black History Month aims to promote knowledge of black history and experience, disseminate information on positive black contributions and heighten confidence and awareness of black people in their cultural heritage.

A special presentation - A Black History of Southampton will be taking place at The Wool House from 4 October. This presentation is drawn from exhibitions and displays shown in the city over the last nine years and gives a flavour of the part played by Black people in the city over the past 500 years.

Don John founded Black History Month in 2005 and then collaborated with Jayanti Shah and together they have transformed this occasion into a significant event in the Southampton calendar.
