First major Noël Coward revival at Nuffield

Nuffield Associate, Blanche McIntyre, directs an ensemble cast in Noël Coward’s Tonight at 8.30, the first major UK revival of this collection of nine one-act plays since Coward starred in them in 1936.

From vaudeville to satire, from broad farce to intricate comedy of manners, from melodrama to romance, the collection of plays that is Tonight at 8.30 encompasses the full kaleidoscopic range of Coward's writing. Plays include the chaotic Red Peppers music-hall show, a bankrupt couple using all Ways and Means to scheme their way out of debt, and Still Life, the original version of the film Brief Encounter.

Throughout the performance run at the Nuffield Theatre and the tour there will be opportunities for audiences to see the full theatrical spectacle of the production in special triple bill days. These days will see all nine plays performed on the same day. The marathon spectacle will be divided into three trios and Nuffield Kitchen will be embracing the era, with 1930s lunch, afternoon tea and dinner party menus available.

Rising star, winner of the UK Theatre Award for Best Director (2013) and one of Nuffield’s Associate Artists, Blanche McIntyre, directs this new theatrical production of Tonight at 8.30:
“Tonight at 8:30 is a lost masterpiece: a celebration of writing and acting that builds to become a manifesto on how to live. The breadth of Coward’s vision and the depth of his humanity are staggering. Directing the Tonight at 8:30 sequence has been one of my lifetime ambitions and I’m thrilled to be working on it with Nuffield and English Touring Theatre.”
