January 2014 Newsletter

Welcome

The New Year is time for looking ahead and there’s much to look forward to culturally in Southampton: a new arts complex beginning to rise from the ground, thrilling new exhibitions, Sea City Museum’s superb pavilion building, open mic at the Art House, opera at the Mayflower, outdoor events from Art at the Heart in Guildhall Square this summer, and plenty more.

For our part, CultureSouthampton will continue to work with all our partners in arts, heritage, education and business across the city to raise awareness and to generate funds – ensuring that Southampton’s reputation for culture and creativity is second to none.

Thank you for your support and interest, and please forward this enewsletter to your friends and contacts so they, too, can keep in touch with developments.

Spotlight on... CultureSouthampton's 2013

2013 was a year of transition, change and promise for the city’s burgeoning Cultural Quarter and the Arts Complex. We would like to share with you our highlights of the year:

From plans to foundations

Significant progress was made as we were able to update you about the anticipated build of the Arts Complex, moving the project beyond the drawing board and closer to a tangible reality.

We were pleased to be able to report in January 2013 that the planned area for the build of the Complex was being investigated as part of the planning process. Six months later, planning permission was approved – a significant step forward.

With appropriate diligence archaeologists set to work with their necessary investigations in September as part of the pre-construction process. Running alongside this, the City Council started the process of selecting an operating company for the arts complex.

Most importantly, work started in December – what a fantastic end to a very constructive year.

Generous support

We could not have achieved any of these notable successes without the generous support of cultural and business partners as well as funding bodies. The Trust is extremely appreciative of the generous donations towards the Arts Complex made by the Barker-Mill Foundation, the J.Paul Getty Jnr Foundation and the Wolfson Foundation.

We were also delighted to welcome Founding Members City College, Southampton; and Corporate Members - King Edward VI School, Paris Smith and RSM Tenon.

Growing interest

In addition to the dedication of cultural, educational and business partners, many people in and around Southampton have showed their support by signing up to receiving our email newsletter, liking us on Facebook and YouTube and following us on Twitter. Their combined numbers are now approaching 2,000 and growing steadily. We thank each and every one of you.
