Culture Southampton
Michael Ockwell, Chief Executive of the Mayflower Theatre and CultureSouthampton Trustee, has introduced a season of dance to the theatre’s programme in the next 12 months. He explains,
“Dance is a real passion of mine and over the next twelve months I have programmed a dance season and wanted to take audiences on a journey to experience and enjoy mainstream and contemporary dance.
Boxe Boxe is a breath-taking show which fuses boxing with dance and is here for just two performances on 14 & 15 April. Eight exceptional dancers blend martial arts, street and contemporary dance to create a spirited and stunning fusion of hip-hop and fisticuffs dazzled members of our staff when they saw a preview earlier this year.
Another new dance company join us from 28-31 May as Northern Ballet make their Southampton debut with their production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The show sees the romantic antics of a touring dance company played out on one magical night as the company travels by sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. The contemporary setting for Shakespeare’s fantastically funny play set to ballet is a really accessible way into dance for the whole family.
English National Ballet return this autumn with their beautiful production of Coppélia from 15-18 October, the comic family tale of an eccentric toymaker and his mechanical doll. The show is an enchanting, effervescent family ballet, perfect for young and old alike. Delibes's irresistibly melodic score is performed by English National Ballet's full orchestra.
Matthew Bourne's magical dance production of Edward Scissorhands returns revitalised in March 2015. Based on the classic Tim Burton film and featuring the beautiful and unforgettable music by Danny Elfman and Terry Davies it is a magical story that sits perfectly on the stage.
Finally, I am personally thrilled to be bringing one of the finest ballet dancers in the world, Carlos Acosta with his own show, On Before in April 2015. On Before is created and danced by Carlos and Royal Ballet Principle Dancer Zenaida Yanowksy, telling the story of a doomed relationship between a man and a woman.”
