Southampton City College launches the event at their hub featuring performances from local colleges, schools and other organisations in the city. The Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Derek Burke, will officially launch the activities for the month and John Simmit is this year’s special guest. He is a Cuban-Jamaican ‘Brummie’ who specialises in urbane observations.

The aim of Black History Month, founded by Don John and organised in partnership with Jayanti Shah is to promote the knowledge of black history and experience. It is to disseminate information on positive black contributions and to heighten the confidence and awareness of black people in their cultural heritage.
